One of the most important thing when we interview our new nanny to
check out her references and her professional papers. If we have a nanny
agency we can hope they've already checked all of them for us and they
believe the certificates are valid. Still in any situation ask the nanny
for the papers and make copies of them for yourself. Better to be safe than
sorry.So what are the most important papers a nanny has to have? There are some mandatory and some optional documents you can or have to ask for. In our new series we will talk about all of them one by one.
The first and most important document you have to check is the Proof of ID.
It can be an ID card/Passport/Drivers licence.It has to be a photo ID card as it shows the person on the paper and the person in real life are the same. Please never forget to check this part of the documents as we know about cases when someone arranged an interview and another person arrived on behalf of them. Always make a photo copy of this document. Always make sure the person lives and works in the country legally.
When you ask for the Proof of ID you have to be sure the ID is valid (Expire date), which country the card is from (if it is a UK driver licence check for the place of birth) so you know the nationality and the age. These information are important for your interview.
If the ID card is from the UK or from one of the EU countries than you don't need to ask for more papers on the ID part. As people from the UK (obvious) and from the EU can legally live and work in the UK.
If the passport is from a country the UK doesn't have free workforce contract with than your nanny has to have a Visa. It is not enough for you to see the NI number card as it won't contain the validity of the Visa. You have to make sure the nanny works here legally and the visa's expiry date is at least one year ahead. It might seem a bit harsh to check out these information. I am sure the nanny who sits in front of you on an interview are nice and genuine. Still as a future employer and as a responsible parent you have to make sure everything is valid and good.
Sometimes with some extra work in the beginning you can save loads of headaches and misunderstanding for the future.
